To me, a photograph must make you feel something to be truly appreciated—Why else would you want to look at it?
I like to photograph normal everyday things. Things that conjure up a childhood
memory or a touching milestone. Landscapes are nice but I'd rather shoot
subjects in an intimate setting, close up. Scanning your eyes across an orchid
can be just as intense as scanning across a landscape--but much more
personal. Though, I have to say, I'd love to visit the Badlands and shoot one day.
When shooting flowers, I prefer to have them look like they are posing for me—
as if they were striking a pose for a 1940s Vogue magazine. Orchids are fun
to shoot because so often they appear to be singing. That's why I like to shoot
orchids in bunches of two or three or even more. They look like church choirs
in their colored robes.
